Resumo
Rygart Arrow is an 'unsorcerer,' one of the few (one in a million) people completely lacking the ability to use the quartz stones used as an energy source for everything in this world.

This status has made him an outcast and an object of scorn, leaving him unable to work machinery, fire a gun, or even light a lamp without aid. His father had desperate hopes that sending him to a military academy might awaken some power in him after all, but no such miracle occured. Rygart has since since become a farmer on the isolated outskirts of the Country of Krisna—but the friends he made while he was there, and the loyalty he has towards them, is about to change everything.

Two of them now sit on the country's throne, and when they summon him to the capital he discovers just how sheltered his life has been—Krisna is in danger, war is about to break out, and the conditions for surrender put forward by their enemies are impossible to meet. An elite unit of enemy troops is already launching attacks on the capital—an elite unit led by their old friend Zess.

What is Rygart supposed to do when his inability to use quartz leaves him utterly useless in the face of the battle that looms ahead? When he stumbles into a powerful and ancient mecha that the quartz-wielding people of Krisna have been unable to use, he may just have found a way to stand amongst them... but when his friends are on opposite sides, where does that truly leave him?

Break Blade is about a continent that is in turmoil, and war breaking out between its kingdom. Everyone uses "magic" -the ability to control a mineral called quartz- for everything, and only our hero and his little brother are unlucky enough to not be able to use it. This is an important plot point, as oil and other fossile fuels are rarer than gold. Compensated in that our hero is the only one able to use a recently found ancient Golem, this series' mecha.
The art and plot is good, but lacks character development, action and it fails to bring me to awe.

The plot is not too original, but it is executed well. The ancient Golem, in many aspects, is not a super prototype, which is a plus for me. In fact, both primary kingdoms in the story are developing newer golems as fast as they can.
As for the reasons for war, that isn't explained until a little later. Won't spoil it, I'm telling you there is a logical reason so that you won't think that the higher-ups are just blood-thirsty freaks.

The art is not disappointing, but more detail and contrast could be made in the background. It is a world that mostly desolate flatland, but some vibrance would be nice.
You won't see a lot of detail inside the flying mech parts either, but that's because quartz tubes makes up the ligaments of the present-day golems, not a traditional network of wires. There isn't a large variety of mecha, though the kingdoms are making new ones. This is not Gundam though, where there's a bunch of unique supers and ace customs along with mass reproductions. Those make up most of Break Blade.
The ancient golem compensates both.
As for character designs, it seems biased: some of the (usually male) antagonists look evil, and sometimes uglier. Their mecha look cooler though, and they do not look like devils. The newer models look more like angels, and if you read it, you'll find out why.

The biggest let down is the action. If you want to see the mecha fight, it is MUCH MORE enjoyable to view the animated version. Fight scenes are confusing. The panels don't help you imagine how they are moving in coordination with their surroundings. At times you may wonder who is the pilot. People take so many panels to cry about death it's irritating. Battles start and end so damn fast even though they feel slow paced.
This series sucks in terms of portraying warfare. A lot of attention is paid to strategy. The commanders are decisive always thinking what the other side is thinking. They're supposed to be brilliant minds, but you will see mostly one-and-one fights with interruptions or mooks getting stomped on. Talking about the movements of anyone other than the main crew is obsolete if you don't see enough top views or zoom outs.

The biggest highlight in Break Blade for me is that there really is no true villain. Although Lygatto's the protagonist, a lot of people on the opposing side can be sympathized with. The motivations of most characters are also well-intentioned and most of them have something to lose besides their life and kingdom. The talks both sides have after a fight are usually heartwarming and just makes it hard to hate any of them. The only ones I can hate are the psychopaths, abnormals and Lygatto! A major problem here is that people die pretty often in this series, even shortly after their introduction. One by one, people who don't look like mooks at all suddenly die just to make someone on their side cry. Pretty damn cruel, but realistic and disheartening since you didn't get to know batshit about them and their relationship.

Most characters are realistic and rational, especially the generals, but people like Lygatto have their moments. At least he breaks the mold of protagonists by **spoiler:wanting to learn to get used to killing early**.
There is a problem with misunderstandings though. Which don't happen often but have devastating effects.
As far as ethics go, you won't see any decent Aesops or revelations. It's is either avoided by characters, used for drama or curtly spoken about by someone mature. People really need a psychologist here, as the people in this series who aren't at Jedi-level lose their rationality once emotions or ethics are involved.
One complaint is the melodramatic shock most people have concerning the ancient golem. Same thing goes for "legendary generals and pilots". It gets tiring after the second time. That golem is not even that great, nor is Lygatto an ace.
The characters are good to being with, but you don't seem them growing together.

Meanwhile, romance is just a device for drama, comedy (to lighten up the fact that it's about war) and loyalty in this series. It's a static side-story, with very little romantic development between ANY two characters.Saying somebody "loves" someone else in this series is the same as saying he or she cares about that person's physical welfare. Now there should be development in later chapters, and I could make a list of possible pairings, but it's pointless for this series. Plus, Lygatto is freakin' dense but at least he doesn't have a harem and his density is somewhat rational.

The character back-story is pretty lame, though. It connects a few of the characters, but the flashbacks hold little character development. Dialogue in the present either suggests it or already delivered the point of the flashback. It's overused for Lygatto, and nearly non-existent for others where a flashback would hep a lot. They could have been utilized more efficiently.
There is a lot of potential for back-story regarding the ancients that built the golem. There are MANY questions. And not just about the golem.

Despite all this, I have enjoyed reading this manga. It has its flaws, but it should become better after further developments in the plot. I recommend this to those who read for mecha but NOT psychological conflict (a.k.a. metagames). Impatient readers could also be excluded.

Alright so here is my first review on here, so bear with me if I cover obvious points. Break Blade could be easily described as a it's name suggests, a broken blade that is not yet whole. It can be surmised as an awesome new look into Mech design with incredible fight scenes, beset on its plot, fan service and character issues. So first I'll start out with the negatives. The story and its arcing is biggest issue to address, somewhat of a jumbled tossed around mess of; "wait so what is going on now?" I believe the Author catches on later in the series after pacing it worse than AoT and gives some helpful info in a .5 chapter. This to me, gives the impression that this is one of the authors first mangas, hes understands how to execute certain things well, and others not so much, which will bring me to my next point; the art. The styling is original enough and well executed but it does contain its flaws. The most prominent is the character design, yes all the characters look nice and are sexy, but its a real issue to develop an attachment to a character when they all look the same. This not as prominent with the males, but its definitely an issue with the female characters. Next comes character development, which is done to some extent but in odd ways and characters will often just do 360s in the way they act. And to top it off in the Cons category, the relationships between most characters are just plain weak.

Now after ripping on what doesn't really matter in a Mecha, we can go ahead and get into what does, the mechs or Golems as they called. So to begin with there is the mech design, which is top notch and instantly grabs the eye. The author does an excellent job at representing these hulking fighting platforms that are literally made from a rock. Their movement nothing like that of Eva, which is lanky, unorthodox and graceful, nor that of Gundam which is forceful, precise and robotic; the author managed to create a very special type of mech. These Golems are constructed from quarts, which is a brittle rock represented as a high value material that is necessary to power the Golems. In effect these massive constructs of war are bulky, fragile, crude and slow. This doesn't mean they aren't powerful weapons war though, capable of wielding massive swords and shields and shooting large bolts capable of piercing multiple men is nothing to be ignored in war. Every nation has them and they are essential to war in this setting.

The next thing the author executed effectively was the fight scenes, not incredible artwork done here, but its still far above average, but there is a serious issue the author needs to sort with the mechs; that is distinguishing whos who in a fight. I understand that all the Golems are very similar, but there needs to be a better way to tell them apart. But besides that detail, the fight scenes always leave the reader wanting more. The authors ability to have you on the edge of your seat at all times when a fight has erupted never ceases to amaze me either, you're always unsure as to who will have the upper hand, unless its Girge who is downright the scariest motherfucker I've encountered in this series.

This review is from me reading up to chapter 71, I look forward to the completion of this series, but based upon how it's been paced so far I don't see it being completed anytime soon. Good read for those just looking for an original manga, a terrific must-read for those who are fans of the mecha genre.

Stroy- Break blade is about a continent being rapidly ingulfed in war. the story follows Lygatto a young man born into a world of "Magic" Users it is called magic but it is just the ability to manipulate quartz to make power machinery ect. However he is a one in a million person who cannot use this ability meaning he cant drive a car, turn on a light, or pilot a mecha. Untill an anceint mecha is unearthed and through some personal connections and circumstances he ends up piloting the mecha no one else could get it to work because it didnt rely on quartz power. The story developes from here dont want to give anything away.

Art- The art is very nice the characters and mecha are very well drawn. however the back grounds do tend to be alittle bland this is partly because it takes place so far in a very mountainous desert region another problem at least for me is that the combat seens tend to be difficult to figure out however a tend to have this problem. I also think it is because unlike Gundam and many other mechas out there not many people have custom mechas they are mass produced with a few different models being seen so far. it is also aleviated alittle by the fact that they dont all carry the same weopons there are differnet guns, swords ect.

Story- The story so far i have found to be fairly interesting the characters are all good lygatto can be a bit of a douche and he hasnt really grown that much yet but im hopeful. there are a few things that i wasnt expecting going into the manga but have been positives for me the firsts is the author isnt afraid to kill of some of the characters none of them have been too important but its not like naruto or bleach where none of the characters that have names are ever killed or if they are they are promptly brought back to life or in the other extreme soukou no strain where all the main supporting characters are killed off multiple times. second lygatto has broken the mold in that while he dosnt like killing he will and has killed quite a few people. in the begining ***Spoiler he goes so far as to say he wants to get used to killing. and third the ancient mecha dosnt turn out to be an all powerful weapon it is in some was superior and in others inferior example it is more powerful than the more modern mecha but has weak armour and short usage time. also these mecha dont fly and they dont pull out some allpowerful ability and destroy mas amounts of people so of the unnamed ones are taken out quickly but the main fights are good no one gets away unscathed and its more about bludgeoning than cutting or blasting away which i also found interesting. also the battles are fairly tactical its not just some insane random mess. well i went way more in depth there then i planned on still have one more thing to add. Romance hasnt been a alot of it yet but looks like that could be changing shortly and it could be complicated *** spoiler the queen loves lygatto he loves her but shes married to the king obviously will be interesting to see how that turns out.

i think this manga has alot of potential we still no very little about the ancient mecha, characters have alot of room to grow and there is plenty of room for back story
