This manga is a spin-off of the parent story Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari, focusing instead on the adventures of the spear hero which occurs at some point in the main story. As such, this story to a certain extent requires some prior knowledge on the parent story otherwise it could be a confusing mess. Whilst the manga does try to explain things to the reader in case they have never read the parent story, the experience fall short without prior knowledge.

As this is a spin-off of a future event in the parent story (Or at least it's in the Webnovel version of the parent story; and since the Light Novel version and Webnovel version diverge from the Cal Mira island arc I do not know how this Spin-off will fit in), it may potentially spoil some events of the parent story. Whilst the effect is minor, it may be better to read this manga after finishing the parent story.

(Contains very minor spoilers)

The story of this spin-off itself isn't spectacular. It follows the spear hero Motoyasu Kitamura, who has gained the ability to turn back time with a special spear and returns to the beginning of their adventure. Him, knowing the future events takes action to change the future. However, due to the events of the events of the parent story Motoyasu has become a broken man, slightly psychologically unstable in a sense, something this manga doesn't portray well enough. As such, his memories are a little messed up (also due to the time travelling, as shown in the manga). As a result he doesn't take the best course of action or find solutions to problems using wisdom and knowledge of the future like other time-travelling/new game/restart stories like Re:Zero, All You Need Is Kill, Steins;Gate etc. Instead he acts very spontaneously like a madman, which may annoy many readers. In the Webnovel, him acting like a madman was actually fun to see to a certain extent, something this manga failed to replicate. Motoyasu also kept his abilities from the future, making him stronger than most people in this manga. However the way the manga shows his power is not satisfying enough. Though understandably, Motoyasu does not care about his powers at this point due to him becoming mad. As you read the manga you start to understand more about the conditions and the situation he is in, such as why he is back in time, the conditions of the reset etc.

The art is alright, but not better than the parent story. As for character development there is next to none and would require the reader to already have sufficient knowledge on the characters (The manga only explains the bare minimum about these characters). Whilst not an exceptional spin-off it is still something fans of the original series would enjoy.

Many anime onlys of The Rising Of the Shield Hero give this no thought and immediately shut it down. But I'm here to tell you, "Give it a shot, then you can tell me whether it's good or not." Though it's more enjoyable if you do, you can still follow the plot without having completed the main series.

This story is all about a redo of the Shield Hero's storyline but in Godmode, a story about an overpowered character where his flaw is having zero IQ while being absolutely insane and bloodthirsty. Yes, this is the Spear Hero I'm talking about.

Motoyasu returns in time, with all his previous stats, memories and weapon upgrades. Though he tries to search for Filo it is not really too relevant and most of the story is about trying to stop the other heroes from dying. It is so satisfying to see Motoyasu mow down all the enemies with ease, his relationship with his filolials (who he treats as his children) and Naofumi are so endearing. Reading this from Motoyasu's perspective, his inner thoughts are never a bore. Sometimes you can empathise with him while other times, you go "MOTOYASU NO".

Despite it being more of a comedic take, characters don't lose any IQ points and plot and act as they were in the main story based on their motivations. There are still obstacles to overcome and real stakes. Though less than the main story, actions still have a certain weight to them.

I really appreciate this more lighthearted approach to the Shield Hero's story, discovering so many different what-ifs makes for a fun read. I may be biased about this, this story basically hits all of my personal preferences while being pretty well-written.

Tl;dr Don't read unless you've finished the story and its a great read for those who have.

Personally I am really enjoying this manga. It contains major spoilers to the rising of the shield hero because it takes place right aftermajor events in the main story. Therefore all his knowledge contains those spoilers as the remembers it. This ties in very nicely with the story and to say it is a spin off is actually incorrect, but rather story that is taking place between his death and when he returns to fight on... For those that have read ahead in the story you know what I'm talking about and you'll enjoy the change in pace.

Okay now to the execution

Story: 8.5
The personality of Motoyasu is very true to his character and it really pulls off how sick in the head he is and honestly I find the humor from him more funny than in the original story. The story gives more details about Silt Welt which was never really visited in the original story and some of the alternative turns of events are quite interesting. The story also fills in the gaps as to what happens to Motoyasu after he died and what the spear offered him upon death. For someone who's read the WN it really fills in an itch and I'm interested in seeing how events unfold.

Artwork: 8
The art work is once again the artwork is well done and I really have no complains.

Character development: 8
Due to the change in environment and having not facing as many hardships, many of the MCs have a more lighthearted approach to things and are developing differently than they did in the main story. Motoyasu remains the same in his undying love towards Filo, but there is a growing bond between him and the other characters that's quite enjoyable to see.
