Koe no Katachi review
Story/Enjoyment: Koe no Katachi started as a one-shot and evolved in to so much more.
The original storyline focused on the main character, Ishida Shouya and his interactions with the new girl in class, Nishimiya Shouko. Nishimiya is not just any transfer student, she is deaf. This fact is very difficult for Ishida, his class, and even his teacher to grasp.
The manga itself deals with very heavy topics, like bullying and suicide. Although the one-shot portrayed the bullying and its effects on not only Nishimiya's but Ishida's lives, the manga continuation of Koe no Katachi deals with the after-affects of bullying and Ishida's life a few years down the road from when he first met Nishimiya.
I found myself crying throughout several chapters of Koe no Katachi. There are many aspects in this manga that make it relatable. It is both heartbreaking and heartwarming.

Art: Overall I feel that the art in this manga is fantastic. It is interesting to see how the mangaka incorporated sign-language in to the illustrations. I also love that all of the characters look like real people. There are no overly-attractive characters or females with huge breasts: the characters' appearances fit the tone of the story.

Character: Ishida Shouya is the main focus of the manga continuation. The mangaka does a great job of showing the readers Ishida's bad and good points. Ishida is by no means a hero, but I find him relatable. He is lost, confused, and looking for answers on how he should be living his life. I'm not sure whether I like him or not, but I do not dislike him.

Overall: I highly recommend this manga. If you choose to read it, I advise you to keep tissues nearby!

STORY
This one-shot manga started out with a lot of potential to be something really fabulous. Instead it teased without ever fully delivering; by the end I was left feeling completely unsatisfied. Basically this would make a great beginning to a longer series, but as a one-shot it really falls flat. It leaves far too many open-ended questions. Don't get me wrong, the plot itself is clever, but it promises more than it delivers.

ART
The style isn't as detailed as I generally prefer and it seems the manga-ka might have an aversion to drawing backgrounds. However, the guys were all very nice-looking and best of all it was SO easy to tell them apart (something that doesn't always happen in yaoi manga. ^_^;

CHARACTER
The characters were excellent; very nicely developed (for the most part) without being overly predictable in their actions. I just wish some of their back stories could have been explored a bit more...

ENJOYMENT
Right up until the end I was thoroughly enjoying what was going on. The plot was interesting, the characters were fun to read about, the setting was slightly historical, but something about the ending just felt unresolved for some reason. I was also a bit disappointed by the lack of guy/guy scenes. There's not much...just a kiss or two and some U.S.T. between a couple of the minor characters.

OVERALL
Well, despite being disappointed by how Rokuya chose to wrap things up, I still enjoyed this enough that I will probably keep it in my personal collection. The art was easy on the eyes and the interactions between the various characters was charmingly enjoyable.

KISEKI NO SHOUNEN review
If you like different types of stories with sci-fi and supernatural settings you should try Kiseki no Shounen. I had it on my plan to read list but didn't know much about it except that it was about an unusual kid who floats. I took a look at it and immediately recognized the art from Cloud (Kuraudo), which I really like, so I decided to read it since I really like his other story and artwork.

Noujou Junichi’s artwork is highly realistic and naturalized, I like the fact that each character looks uniquely individual and they actually look Asian. It looks very real yet he has a distinctive style that I could recognize with seeing one image. The stories I’ve read by him involve very intelligent characters with weird abilities and cool mysterious plots. I really would love to see more of his works translated so I could read them. :) I also don't know why his works are not more recognized or higher rated, they should be. However, if you prefer very cartoony moe type art typical of manga it probably won’t be to your liking as it is realistic with distinctive expressions, more along the lines or say Death Note or Rin. The background of the buildings and cityscapes are well done too. He is a mature well known mangaka so I think he has a more nuanced approach to his style and writing than many younger mangakas do. Often times it seems more seinen than shounen with eechi that seems mature and that may be partly because of the mangaka's own outlook.

It's really good, cool odd sort of story that keeps you reading. It involves a strange young man with unusual abilities. Oda floats. He scares his classmates and tells them about the future. The story involves mathematical formulas, the future, and romance but also has a sort of bizarre surreal effect to it as well. The romance is understated and subtle but as the story progresses you can tell that they love each other, it’s just not shown in a typical shounen or school romance way but more nuanced.

In fact, a lot of this story is more mature shounen or seinen, and I am not talking mature in a sexual way or a violent way but more of an approach to the story. There is a strange sort of dark psychology to it that is also not overt, but leads the reader to think and speculate or ruminate on it. It’s not as dark as other psychological manga I’ve read such Death Note but I think that it would also be enjoyed by some of their readers for similar but different qualities. Since it’s a shounen it does not get excessively dark though.

The one thing is I am still wondering how levitation could affect the future so much so that part is a little out there. Some readers seem to want it to make sense since it is sci-fi so they may not get its style. Kiseki no Shounen certainly has a certain quirkiness to it.

Oh of note, this was listed as complete at 15 chapters but that is just the first two volumes there is still another volume to be translated but yes it is complete in its original Japanese version. So it has more than 15 chapters as I just read the 16th.

So for ratings the art is a 9, the plot itself is a 7 or 8 and it’s probably an 8 or perhaps a 9. It could use more characterization perhaps as sometimes it needs to tell a bit more than it does it shows more than it tells.
But I really loved the line he repeats to the girl a lot. I won’t spoil it for you.
Overall I enjoyed traveling through time with this sci-fi manga and hope others will lift off and enjoy the journey as well.

Nejishiki review
I'm not really sure if I can write a review for these short stories, since they are highly experimental works that can easily go over someone's head, including mine. I should also mention that, even if I have read most of the stories that are listed both in this volume and in "Akai Hana" (which will most likely be also included in this review), not all of them were printed in my country, and I don't know if they are available outside of Japan. So, I haven't read everything yet, but seeing that at the moment of writing this the only other review is a negative one, I wanted to at least say something about why I liked these stories (and why I like the gekiga movement and the works of mangakas such as Yoshihiro Tatsumi or the Tsuge brothers). So, first, I think some context is needed. Earlier, I talked about gekiga as a movement, but it is more accurate to describe it as a sentiment. It's about the sense of drifting that the generation that grew in post war Japan was experiencing, watching the lifestyle they knew being quickly replaced by the alienation of modern society and feeling angry and powerless about it. A feeling that, I think, some people could relate to, even today. The gekiga authors were the first to refuse the concept of manga as mere entertainment and started dealing with more mature subjects as well as employing techniques derived from European cinema, particularly noir and expressionism. Tezuka, who was their main source of inspiration in the use of the language of comics, was in turn inspired by them to write his more mature works (such as "Kirihito" or "MW"). It is thanks to their work that mangas are now as we know them and it is commonly acknowledged that seinen mangas have their roots in gekiga.
As for Yoshiharu Tsuge's stories, they go from deeply symbolic and surreal works (like the eponymous "Nejishiki", or "Yanagiya Shujin") to more realistic ones (like "Ooba Denki Mekki Kougyou-sho" or "Umibe no Jokei"). They are crude, merciless and often have disturbing or otherwise impactful imagery that, together with the lack of any form of closure (to the point they may sometime seem almost pointless and utterly weird), estrange the reader and create that very feeling of alienation the author was probably trying to convey. Even in his more "down to earth" works, the characters feel like they are far away, drowned in their melancholy and unable to communicate to the reader or to each other (like in "Umibe no Jokei"), which makes for some touching moments. The grotesque drawings together with a masterful use of chiaroscuro and detailed, gloomy backgrounds give a sense of oppression and hopelessness that encompasses the reader and draws him in a unique athmosphere which is this author's signature: the balance between real and surreal, tenderness and brutality, is what makes them truly interesting. Tsuge is a misanthrope, and it is easy to see why: the products of his mind can be depressing, weird, boring or even pointless to some. But I like them. I hope someone else does, too.

13 Club review
13 Club, a website that hosts strange tales that you wouldn't see in your daily life.

The manga covers 5 short stories about strange things happening to the people. I am going to keep this review spoiler free. But first of all, I would like to say that this manga isn't for everyone... Parts of it made my stomach turn, and not because of the gore, but because of the shocking way that the stories are told. Even so, I still enjoyed it and I am excited to get into the review!

Story - 9/10

As I said, this is a series of short stories, meaning that each story is significantly different to the other and the only relevance being Kudan, the man who collects these stories for his website. Perhaps I would have given the story a higher score if it was a whole story altogether. But some stories had dragged the others down. I would have given the first story an 9, the second an 8, the third an 8, the fourth a 9 and the last one a 9. You may see why once you read the manga, or you may completely disagree with my opinion, that is up to you to decide. However, I found the stories each to tell a moral story, which was quite intriguing.

Art - 8/10

I really liked the artwork and I think that it really gave the manga a more "mysterious" feel to it. The reason I gave it an 8/10 and not a 10/10 is because of the mistakes that I could spot, which were made by the manga-ka. These mistakes are mostly visible in his more detailed drawings of the characters' faces. Even though the artwork is really good, I found some characters had differed to their previous drawings.
Character - 8/10

The characters were well made and very interesting. I found Kudan to become a weird and lovable iconic figure for the manga. The only thing that the characters missed was character development, which none of them had.

Enjoyment - 7/10

This manga had kept me entertained, but it didn't keep me addicted to it. I didn't feel bored, but I felt like I could stop reading anytime, and it would have been okay. Even though the stories were interesting and some made me stick to the manga, there were some that simply put me off. Because of the spine-chilling mystery in the third manga, and all of the unfortunate things that happened to those unfortunate people really made my stomach turn.

Overall - 8/10

Overall, this manga was pretty good, and I loved the story telling involved. The artwork was nice, the characters were interesting and unique, and I had enjoyed this series quite a bit. It is a shame that it was only 11 chapters long, and I would love to read a sequel.

Princess Ai Monogatari review
This manga was made at the time when companies like Marvel, Tokyopop, and others were trying to break into the manga craze with titles like Peach Fuzz and the X-Men manga. They imitated Japanese manga, did not understand manga, nor its appeal to western manga fans. Most of these titles were a cross between manga and comic books that were not really either, revolting both American comic book fans and manga fanatics alike. This left little to no audience willing to purchase these products as they lacked both eastern and western identity, possessing only an awkward, uncanny mash-up of something in between. Thus, most of these titles, were both critical and financial failures.

Princess Ai, on the other hand, was not. Most western manga was imitative, but Ms. Love brought her own voice to this manga. A blend of fantasy, lolita fashion, and autobiography, she writes about Princess Ai, who is the thinly-veiled authoress herself, and Kent, based off of her late husband, Kurt Cobain, as they work to figure out who she is and how she came to Tokyo, all the while falling and love and becoming idol-singers.

It was in turns, to my young self, interesting because of who wrote it, a well-known, controversial figure, its lolita fashion, its music, its art, its magic, and most of all for its seemingly doomed, but deep love story, which I, even then, knew was written based off an entirely true and tragic story of a talented, young singer's suicide.

It has been over 10 years since I read this manga, and though I no longer remember most of the details of it, I do remember the feelings I felt while reading it and for that, I believe it to be a great book. So where all others failed at making western manga, I believe Princess Ai, Ms. Love, and her talented artist, Kujiradou Misaho, all succeeded. It is a truly touching tale that I recommend to anyone in the mood for something very different from a very unlikely person. Courtney Love may be a controversial figure, but for this manga, I loved her as a child.
