ReLIFE review

We always want to go back and change the errors we did although it was never possible in reality. So what if it did? What if we could go back and change up a few things? What has happened has happened but that doesn't stop you from making yourself look young and going to a high school doesn't it? This is my review of the excellent ReLIFE.

It's slow moving and sometimes stagnant plot made for an interesting change I hadn't previously experienced so well while reading a manga. ReLIFE was long but sweet. What I really liked was the large cast and the subplots given to almost all of them. Yes, perhaps ALL of the characters got their screentime (or should I say pagetime?) equally and each and every character had an interesting story to tell. ReLIFE isn't your average RomCom. It's far beyond that. The fact that Kaizaki had only one love candidate made it much better than the love triangles and the harems which plague our beloved medium. Now most aren't bad, but people have a habit of liking something that isn't all too much common and I'm one of them. Another part I loved was the characters themselves.

Male (Shounen) characters are almost always flawed in many ways because the author makes us look at the characters through their eyes, and in doing so they eradicate all unique points of the characters themselves. ReLIFE takes a different approach. It gave Kaizaki a character. His own proper backstory and not a run-of-the-mill cliched one. As for Hishiro, her backstory wasn't much explored but her history with some of the characters was very crucial in setting the final arc and the eventual end of the manga and so I won't be delving deeper than that. Now for the other characters, Yoake was basically the hilarious face of ReLIFE. The way how he knew and exploited Kaizaki's weakness left me with a huge stomachache due to laughter. An was the direct, cheerful and upfront character and watching her was a lot of fun too.

One thing I didn't like much was the unnecessary extra focus on Kariu and Ooga. It felt like it took up too many chapters especially since they didn't get just one arc of focus, the arcs themselves felt too long and I felt those chapters could have been put to better use to either improve Arata x Hishiro or more importantly focus on other characters like Tamarai who unfortunately got the backseat for almost the whole train ride, literally. Thankfully this was a webtoon so the art had color in it. Why am I so happy after seeing color? It's because it's so rare to read manga that are colored. Apart from being my first color Manga, ReLIFE also looked stunning in almost every aspect. It had a clarity and charm no other manga captured when portraying it's characters, maybe Nisekoi can manage to be second since it's character designs were amazing too. The backgrounds as well is something I'd love to point out because in many manga the backgrounds either don't exist or are given very less focus. Once again, ReLIFE went a different route, it made some of the best manga backgrounds I've ever seen, and I know that they're not a crucial part of the story at all but I have to give credit where it's due, especially since very few other manga do that.

At first I never thought I'd come to love ReLIFE so much as I do today. It was slow, easy-going and long. Three things which I adore and hunt for in manga. If I have these, apart from Romance and Comedy, I almost always give it a 9 or a 10. ReLIFE was a 10 for me in my ratings, and I couldn't give it any lower. Why? It not only was different from the usual mangas out there, it excelled in it's own route as well, something even fewer manga accomplish. There are many reasons as to why I would recommend ReLIFE to you. An adorable Romance, adorable characters, COLOR, sweet comedy, easy-going plot, long-running chapters (220+ chapters) among many others. Give ReLIFE a try, because it's definitely worth it. You won't see anything like it again. It's just that fun and unique. The ending as well was one of the best endings I've ever seen or read in a manga or anime, so if you do decide to read till the end, you're gonna love that ending. I won't spoil it, but again, YOU WILL LOVE IT.
