I'm going to be very honest here and say that I'm not the biggest fan of shounen. I don't hate them or anything, and I've thoroughly enjoyed stories like My Hero Academia or One Piece casually, but I don't love them like some people do. However, Jujutsu Kaisen really broke through that for me. It's dark, sure, but it's more than that; it's mature in a way that I didn't expect from a manga that borrows so heavily from shounen tropes. The characters are smart, the planning is well thought out, everybody has motivations and character arcs that are totally believable -- I just was not expecting this incredibly high level of writing from a shounen, and I was pleasantly surprised. Something this hype shouldn't be this mature, or tragic, or well-written, at least not in my head. Not until this story.
