Jiraishin review

Jiraishin is a journey... to the depths of humanity's depravity. This manga showcases a brutal murder case in each volume.

For each case, Jiraishin dives into the psyche of the killer as Kyoya Iida, the protagonist, inches closer to solving the case. Every killer depicts a different side of humanity, but the author does a pretty good job at showing how they got there. He shows you how they got in the situation they are in and how far they are willing to go.

As for the protagonist, Kyoya is awesome. He's the Batman that everyone really wants. He doesn't bow to policy and isn't afraid to do what it takes to find justice, even if that means killing those that he is after. He is a prime example of the dark, brooding antihero everyone loves.

The art is pretty good, nothing special. The sketchy, black-heavy style perfectly sets the grim mood that is the essence of this manga. The story is the same way. It's nothing special, just an episodic, case-by-case plot with no overarching narrative (until the last two volumes), but it serves the purpose of the manga well.

Overall, Jiraishin is not for the feint of heart, or anybody that is hoping for a pick-me-up. Every volume gives you a fascinating look at different examples of humanity at its worst. It can be depressing, but is well worth the read.
