Suki ni Naranai yo, Senpai review
Story 6/10
Art 10/10 Character 5/10 Enjoyment 7/10 Overall 7/10 I have a soft spot for shoujo manga so I tend to be more forgiving of it. I did enjoy reading this manga despite a few issues... The characters are poorly developed and I never particularly sympathized with them. You don't get to learn much about them other than their personalities, which remain unclear/inconsistent (especially the male lead). The second male lead was promising at first, he seemed protective and had good intentions but then he just disappeared and you didn't learn much about him either. They were a bit static. The story has little conflict besides misunderstandings between the two protagonists and very little outside conflict is introduced. When it is, it just disappears instead of having a build-up and resolution. Despite these things, I did enjoy reading it. If you want a quick, light read and aren't looking for too much substance, go for it. I went in with lower expectations. It's fluffy and has a few cute moments, I didn't think it was that terrible. However, if you want a compelling shoujo romance with character growth, conflict and lovable characters, I would search elsewhere. |
Suki ni Naranai yo, Senpai review
A huge dissapointment. It started of well enough with promising characters and the plot seemed fairly interesting but quickly devolved into a shallow story. I might be slightly biased here but the protag is everything I hate in a shoujo heroine; unnecessarily tsundere, airheaded, clumsy, irrational(Can't mind her goddamn business either) and the "I'M DEFINITELY GOING TO MAKE YOU NOTICE ME HI!HI!HI!"type- she's also inconsistent which makes her very annoying and frustrating.
The main guy is nothing to write home about either. He started out interesting and the air of mystery around him was intriguing but all that along with any chance of character exploration was thrown out with a clichè "justification" who hardly even impacts the story. The romance is the worst thing yet, it felt forced, boring and unnatural. Throughout the chapters he wasn't a strong believer of solid relationships and suddenly he's in love and ready to be faithful to the protag?Ok. It doesn't feel like a real relationship or like the two main characters formed a good "bond" at all. It's all very rushed |

Story: 5/10
To be honest I had high expectations for this manga since I've read other stories by the author and I really enjoyed them, but it wasn't the case with this one. It started out great but then it got worse. The story is like any other romance but it's very rushed and the characters are quite inconsistent. I'm gonna assume it is because the author is quite new and they're testing the waters, but this story could have been more than what it actually is. Art: 8/10 Personally I really like the art style and it is one of the reasons that drove me to read the manga in the first place. Character: 3/10 The characters are poor, there's no development and they're completely inconsistent. The main character sometimes is insecure (hiding herself from her 'rivals' or avoiding certain conversations) yet at at the same time is very proactive with the guy she likes, til the point she is quite annoying. I wouldn't mind a character that's strong and determined all the time, but this girl has not a definite character at all. It doesn't make sense that at one point she is not afraid to say what she wants and the very next moment she is avoiding people. The love interest has no development at all. We see glimpses of his life but we never get to actually know him. He apparently dated his teacher once and it seems there's gonna be some kind of conflict in the story but there's nothing. The teacher appears and as soon as she makes an appearance disappears from the story and she's never mentioned again. The guy who would be the 'rival' of the main love interest barely appears. We see him having some kind of interaction with the protagonist. Once again we are faced with a character poorly developed. Enjoyment: 5/10 The story is mediocre. It can't even be compared with other shojos because the conflicts that arises aren't resolved. You can read it very fast since it's quite short, but there are better romances out there, and unless you really like Hatsuharu's art style reading this story is quite pointless. Overall: 4/10 For me, this manga has been the disappointment of the year. I was expecting a lot because I really enjoyed the other stories by Hatsuharu, but this one is lacking in many aspects. |
