Uratarou

Uratarou is sadly yet another great manga that was shaping up to be a epic story spanning hundreds of chapters with beautiful art and amazing characters but was sadly axed and ended after only a meagre 51 chapters when there was clearly going to be hundreds more. TL;DR The manga was axed so nothing matters in the story and there is little reason to read it. But if you wish to read this manga still then continue on, though I don’t advise it.

The story is about a immortal called Uratarou who is trying to die and a mortal named Chiyo who is trying to become immortal and they embark on a journey so they can both fulfill their dreams together. From here we spend 50 chapters exploring Japan hundreds of years ago and meet so many unique and interesting characters. The art in this story is also gorgeous, it’s one of the most visually interesting and unique stories I’ve seen in manga, so much so that it almost motivated me to go and draw in the style of it, that’s how good it is. The Art is the only thing that stayed amazing throughout though. Interesting themes such as what it means to live and what it is like to be immortal and the suffering that you would go through are a key focus of the story but sadly don’t matter in the end because it was axed so these interesting themes mean nothing.

In conclusion, the manga was axed was if you want to read a story with basically only 30 chapters of actual storytelling with phenomal art that ultimately doesn’t matter in the end then go ahead but I really don’t advise it.

Not sure how reviews work so this is just my thoughts on the series. Personally I really enjoyed it and it wasn't too long of a read, so if you have time I would recommend reading this. The plot development is a bit too fast for my liking and so was the character development - I feel like it could've been more drawn out to make it more believable and to get readers to emphasize. This is not to say it's not a good story, per se - I liked the premise. Also, I found the art style really nice to look at and pretty distinctive and sharp - it reminds a bit of Deep Sea Prisoner's work. It's sad that the series was axed and came to a rushed conclusion at the end, but I think overall it was still worth the read and it's good that at least some ends are tied in a pleasant way and the others are left to the reader's own interpretation instead of abruptly ending.

One wants to die, the other wants to live. With this antithesis , we get to know our main characters, Chiyo and Uratarou.

The plot is after the Genpei War (no gonna explain what is that shit, google it lazy boys), where, instead of winning the Minamoto Clan, the Taira won the war because they made a contract with demons. Chiyo, our protagonist, is searching for inmortality because she is dying (obvious, why she would search for it?) and she finds Uratarou, an undead that doesn't give a fuck and then they go to search for inmortality and a way to kill Uratarou. The plot is interesting and in some parts funny thanks to the characters. Later is revealed that the Taira clan won because Chiyo was made a vessel to the next demon king so she is mean to die if she doesn't find anything. Also, we get to know the empress Antoku (THE BEST) and her bodyguard who joins the party. By the way, Antoku is inmortal so she developes a crush in Uratarou in two seconds. Also, in don't know why every girl in a manga has fucking short skirts or dress.

Let's describe the characters, shall we?
Uratarou: undead, doesn't give an orange, probably likes Chiyo. Thanks to her he looks foward on life. Wants to die
Chiyo: cute as fuck, happy-go lucky and optimism protagonist. But she is dying and pregnant. Wow, she is like a teen of nowadays being pregnant and that. She is only 15 so if Uratarou and her make babies is pedophilia. When she goes to the capital she has a mental breakdown. She is the deredere we need in our life.
Antoku: THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST. Empress of Japan and has a bodyguard strong af. A little tsundere and THE BEST. By the way, did I say she is THE BEST? CAUSE SHE IS THE BEST
That spirit: he was an old man protecting chiyo, he died in the first chapter and resurrected like a sipirt. I can't remember his name.

The art style of the author is something that makes this manga good to me because I can't stop loving it. Chiyo and Antoku are way too cute.

Story : Does the job of a shonen. Can feel cheesy but can feel awesome. It relies a lot on big focuses on characters that say an important line that define their way of thinking. Can give you chills or it can be annoying. Can be really dark too. Like every shonen it has also some comedy.

Art: The way that he draws his character is pretty normal but the way he handles the effects. Oh my god. The fights are succesions of scenes with intenses effects and positions. Makes the fight fresh than the usual dragon ball fight type. He plays around with how he handles the boxes and the text.

Characters: Pretty standart characters. Enjoyable though.

Maybe some will be surprised with how one character changes his personallity within just meeting someone.

Enjoyment: The way the things are framed, the way that the action is pictured, and I am really curious where the manga will go since it is only 39 chapters as I am writing this. It seems it will not last long though. An element can ruin the story if you think about it.

SPOILERS -> The main characters see death as an end but when we see that when you die, there's an afterlife and you can see the people you love by moving only your soul. So why wanna bother being alive or being dead? Maybe it's like DBZ. I still need to think about it.

Overall: a manga that you should check it if you want a fresh shonen that is talks about death within staying in the realm of being a shonen.

The story, characters, themes, and basically everything about this manga is fantastic and it is easily one of my favorites. In fact it probably would be my favorite manga if not for a singular issue. The ending ended up being extremely rushed, and becomes obvious within the last few chapters, especially the finale. The way the characters all evolved throughout the story made it clear that they were planning so much farther, but instead it ended in the second arc.

Do I recommend this? Yes absolutely. But is it satisfying? Until the very end extremely.



There's also a super thic albino loli that steps like a dom, so for some that is a very easy incentive

tl;dr: A manga with a strange but good art style and well-developed duo of characters with a plot moving in a really interesting direction that was forced to end at a terrible time. 

This manga gets off to a pretty interesting start. The first thing I noticed was the art style, which is quite strange though in a good way, and reminds me quite a bit of Danganronpa. Overall the art is quite elaborate, with designs that are very cute, but also designs that can be quite creepy, with both of these aspects coming through quite a lot in character expressions. The main duo of characters was also quite interesting, seeming to be opposites, but actually meshing quite well together. They were also both very fleshed out characters and exhibited good growth and relationship growth for most of the series. The plot for the most part was also really interesting, with solid pacing and some good twists. It took a major risk about half way through with some really large-scale events that led to a second half incredibly different from the first, in a way that kind of reminded me of Kuryokohime. I was skeptical about this shift at first, but as it went on it really looked like they would be able to make it work and pull it off. It really felt like something that could be really amazing if they kept taking it slowly and went through it properly. Unfortunately, at that point the manga seems like it got axed and it got rushed into a really forced ending. As mentioned, the direction they were going in wasn’t the type they could quickly just end things well at a drop of the hat because the shift involved intentionally screwing up the narrative because bringing it back together properly would work really well. But it being axed prevents that from happening, and hence though hints at what could have been remain, all that ultimately happened were that the it threw itself in a hole and never got the chance to crawl out, thus resulting in an ending that was a pretty unsatisfying mess.  It had a few good moments that felt like if they had been done properly they could have been great, but in context completely lacked impact, and in terms of the story it explained pretty much nothing with an entire tapestry of plot threads left unresolved. It was a great journey getting up to that ending, but the abrupt ending overall just left a really bitter aftertaste due to how it felt like such a disappointment and waste of potential.
