Domestic na Kanojo review
Update: This shit sucks. Utter garbage. I'm leaving my original review as it shows the decline in quality that just got worse and worse towards the end...

Dometic na Kanojo, or DomeKano for short, is an intriguing story about romantic relationships inlcuding taboo student/teacher and step-sibling ones. But there are many other themes and motifs that are explored as the main characters develop throughout the story.
While there was the potential for a great story, the execution was mediocre at best. The parts I appreciated the most about this work had a Maison Ikkoku-esque feel to them: It was the main characters' journey through life and his development to find his path and achieve his dream. The problem is, it has the same pitfalls as many other works in this genre: it resorts to cheap drama and "coincidences" to advance the plot. The results in an insulting, predictable plot and really devalues the characters. One redeeming aspect is that the plot actually seems to advance, albeit slowly, and is not stuck perpetually at the same stage. I also appreciate how it showcases different types of relationships between classmates, co-workers, and so on. But then again, the cliched character interactions devalue this and make it seem like any other run of the mill romance.
The art is probably the redeeming feature. It's enjoyable to read, and fanservice was not overused, but it rather felt connected with the story.
All considered, I kept going hoping the plot will advance and the story improves. And it kind of did. I'll keep following this to see where it goes.

As of ch. 197:
story 5
art 8
character 4
enjoyment 6

Domestic na Kanojo review
Domestic kanojo: A dumpster fire that ignites the flames of a reader’s heart while having an apocalyptic snowstorm blasting the rectal cavities simultaneously. My fucking god, if any manga has the ability to make me audibly gasp at the sheer retardation that the author provides as cliff hangers at the end of each chapter, it would be this goddamn incestuous, sin-inducing, carnal manga. By looking at the synopsis of the manga, one would already need to brace themself for the rollercoaster of emotions that I can only describe as “weirdly addicting”. It started out pretty normal, and by normal I mean the MC committing future incest (Rui, whom he lost his virginity to) and suddenly having his crush (Hina, whom is his teacher for god sake) marrying into his family as his step-siblings.

At this point of time, all I can say is that I am intrigued. How messy of a love triangle can this get? Who is he gonna get with next? Who will he fuck next? To no one's surprise (or rather everyone’s disbelief), this gay shit of an MC LITERALLY oscillates between his step-sisters as his fuck buddies and not so secret girl-friends, while in-between picking up a random chick or 2 as temporary friends with benefits in the midsts of transition. Metaphorically, think of this as a simple harmonic motion in which the equilibrium of these motions are the transition states of the following to-be fuck buddies (in no particular order): Momo, Miu, Miyabi.

If you haven’t read the manga, you may ask, why is the story a 7/10 in my eyes when everything thus far sounds like cons? Well, the answer is fetishes. From bdsm to vanilla to cuckolding to ara-ara to secret rendezvous to illicit relationships, the culmination of a myriad of fetishes would surely placate you one way or another. To add on, the absolute monstrosity of “your actions leading to consequences” could not be emphasised even more when you have the idiot of the MC going from fucking the shit out of a one step-sister to breaking up with said step-sister within 5 chapters. And just when you think a certain character would surely win, the author gives you a double middle finger and says “okay, it’s time for the other step-sister to be the semen demon of the arc”. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. All in all, the moral of the storyline is that, if it is meant to be unrealistic, just make it even more unrealistic because this is the kind of shit that engages the audience and leaving them with a “what the fucking is going on” feeling after each and every chapter, having no time to recover from the spiriling fire tornado that the MC is causing to literally any fucking small shit that happens in the manga.

Finally, to address the elephant in the room; the ending of the manga. For a good 50 chapters minimum, rui was the forerunner and looking like a solidified pick for the bride to be, but the last 10 chapters were like haha car crash goes brrrrr, already pregnant rui irrelevant pepelaugh, my daughter is now my niece, my family tree is a cape tulip XDXD, my step-sister is now my sister-in-law but shares more genes with my daughter than my actual wife topKEK, lemme go marry my comatose step-sister instead whom I supposedly lost all feelings for LOLOLOL. And with this, concludes the largest mood swing and plot twist in the history of all literature that would leave philosophers gauging their eyeballs out in sheer reverence for nothing would top the climaxes and absolute amazement of a storyline that should be award winning in terms of the amount of fuckery that was jammed packed into one person’s life.

Domestic Girlfriend (DG for short) is a series that I picked up one day on a whim after seeing a trailer for it on YouTube. I went into it without looking up a synopsis, and had no idea what I was getting myself into. And boy, was it one hell of a ride.
I've had my ups and downs with this series, mostly relating to shitty waifu wars that, with time, I grew out of, and came to love this for it's story and presentation instead of just a batch of characters. This series is controversial, both for it's initial premisce and ending (we'll get onto that later). We have alot to talk about, so let's get going!

(WARNING: Spoilers for the ending in it's own section at the end of the review, review ends at "Enjoyment" section)

// Story : 9/10
From the get-go, DG has a very interesting story that got me (and alot of others) instantly hooked. Natsuo finds himself with 2 new sisters, his teacher Hina, whom he has a crush on, and Rui, the girl he lost his virginity to. This may seem very unrealistic, and it is, i'll give you that, but the situations they end up in tend to teeter on the edge of realistic and unrealistic most of the time. The drama feels real though, and you start to feel for the characters. They are faced with important and life changing decisions that lead to pretty great character development.
I do have to adress the fact that there are stronger arcs than others. Some arcs can feel forced and "too unrealistic", especially towards the last few stages of the story, more on that in the "spoiler" part of the review.
I would've given the story a 10/10 if not for these dips in quality, there are alot of side-character arcs that, in my opinion, are just not all that captivating. I came to see the main trio and how they develop, not to see side-characters that I can't get attached to.
That doesn't mean that all the side character arcs are bad, don't get me wrong, some are genuinely brilliant, some just feel unnecessary or forced.

// Art : 9/10
If there is one aspect where Kei Sasuga stands out in compared to any other mangaka in the romance/drama section today, it has to be in the art department.
DG starts off with average looking art. It isn't anything spectacular, but still pretty decent. However, with time, Sasuga's art gets more refined, and by the end of the story, it is absolutely amazing to look at. If I had to compare it to another series with great art, I think it's on par with the art in the currently releasing Bakemonogatari manga adaptation, it's genuinely amazing, and some scenes from the newer chapters left me stunned.
I didn't give this section a 10/10 either, as the art isn't always this amazing.
As I said, it takes a bit to get amazing, which is why I genuinely hope that Sasuga has another project after DG, seeing something start off with that art style would be insane.
Overall, a very clean and polished art style that gets better as the years went on.

// Characters : 10/10
This section is where the community for DG is split. There is an insane amount of characters in this series, so i'll stick to the ones I think are relevant, meaning the main trio of Hina, Natsuo and Rui.
I would've done a part for side-characters, but that would spoil certain arcs and take too much time, as I don't necessarily remember all of them and their progression throughout the story.
Let's talk about our main trio of Hina, Natsuo and Rui. It's hard for me to do this section without spoilers, as if I want to detail their growth, there's gonna be spoilers, which is why i'll say things, but without mentionning who i'm talking about, to try to keep this as spoiler-free as I can.
This first character goes from a shy, anti-social person to someone who is able to do whatever they can to realise their dream. Not my favorite character by far, but their progression is very respectable. They go from wanting what another has out of pure selfishness, to being able to give up this feeling of jealousy.
This second character is harder to develop on, in my opinion. They go from a typical character for this archetype, who doesn't want to give in to their real feelings to a character who is willing to accept sacrifice and gives in, a beautiful progression, in my opinion.
This third and last character for the trio goes from your average, run of the mill person, to someone who can live from their dream, who didn't give up despite what they could've been through. Be warned that this character can be considered a "wimp", my least favorite of this trio.

// Enjoyment : 10/10
This section is going to be entirely about what I think of the series, meaning it's going to feature my opinion, so please take what i'll say with a pinch of salt.

I've had my ups and downs with this series. When I first started reading it around mid-late March 2019, I was fully into the "waifu wars", i'd go onto discords and rage-debate who was better while defending my favorite waifu from this series, and I eventually ended up "hating" this series due to the "poor treatment" of my waifu.
In retrospect, that was so stupid, not because of the ending, but just because I think that I took this way too seriously, and alot of people still do.
At the end of the day, this is a manga meant for entertainment, to distract us from the real world and to get us immersed in a different one, and this one managed to do that for me.
I sort of "dropped" this series around mid-July, reading some spoilers and sometimes some of the chapters, but in January 2020, I did some thinking and thought that there had to be a reason behind why I got into it this much, so I went back and re-watched the anime, and purchased all of the available physical copies of the manga in my country, and fell in love with it all over again, this time not for the waifu wars or just the characters, but for the narrative and presentation.
This manga really has changed my life, it's the first time i've followed a series for this long, and it ending left a void in me, but a warm, fuzzy void, a feeling that it wasn't necessarily over, that i'd still be tied to this story and that I wouldn't forget about it anytime soon.

For that, I want to thank Kei Sasuga for writing such an amazing story.

// SPOILER SECTION //

So, a few words about the ending.

Yes, as some of you may have guessed by now, i'm a Hina fan. I'm going to be completely honest in what I say here: I'm fine with this ending, and no, it's not because my waifu "won". I can't even call this a "victory", I don't like Natsuo, but clearly she does, so i'll ship them, plus they look nice together.
However, I do wish that it had happened some other way instead of having her put into a coma and Marie telling Natsuo about her feelings. If she had confessed herself before the Okunugi arc and Natsuo made up his mind during the coma, it would've been much better that way already.

I won't dwell on this too much as this is more of something for debate in a discussion, but oh well, Thanks for reading if you made it here!

Domestic na Kanojo review
I've only been using MAL to track which anime/manga I've read/want to read, but after seeing all the negative reviews on this manga, I've decided to write my first review. I still have a small pool (sink?) of manga I have read so maybe that's why I like it so much. I'll try and keep this review as spoiler free as possible.

Story - 7
Even though many of the super bad reviews have some good points, I personally still liked this manga. After all, I did decide to read the manga after finishing the anime because I was so intrigued in what was going to happen. Again, maybe it's because of the lack of manga I've read or my personal bias towards the anime, but nonetheless I was able to almost fully enjoy this manga; right up until the end. Unfortunately, it wasn't an ending I wanted, but I still really enjoyed the development up to that point. I was really rooting for her. :')

Art - 10
There isn't much to say about the art besides I really love it. You can always see the detail put into the art, especially in scenic parts like with Natsuo's mentor. The half chapters were pretty cool too. :)

Character - 9
I see a lot of people who don't like the side characters but I think they're a nice addition. They put in a little more spice to the drama and I kinda liked that (Like those from his clubs). Other side characters put a nice spin and add some character development. On a side note, I absolutely LOVE Marie. My guy never fails to let me down.

Overall - 8
Even though there were some things that could be fixed in the end, I absolutely fell in love with this manga. I was always itching for more. I hope to see some more people enjoy this as much as I did.

On a side note, if you haven't heard the opening for this anime, you're missing out. It is really one of the best OP I have ever heard.

Domestic na Kanojo review
Spoilers inside

If you want a love story, look elsewhere. This is not a love story. It is the ultimate glorification of abusive and toxic relationships. The author goes even as far as declaring a completely toxic relationship as better than one that can be healthy.

Shit like After of Twilight does not come even near the crazyness of what Sasuga Kei writes. Only the art is good but the story.. oh man, the story.
We are supposed to feel bad for 23 yo a girl that:

- Manipulates a 17 yo boy in believing that "dying together" is true love.
- She is happy about him telling he would die for her
- They are damaging each other but they don't care.
- They are uncautious and put their own emotional needs before everything else
- They don't discuss at all about the future in a realistic way. Only fairytales.
- Oh, and they could even have discussed about waiting until his graduation, but you know, better not caring at all about each other.

All this should be already enough to say that they are a bad match, but then the author tries to make the readers feel sad for Hina's "sacrifices".
Which sacrifices? She committed statutory rape, in a normal country she would have been closed in jail for years, and here she keeps the job but she's transferred.

Then she returns after quitting job for her own personal reasons, no one forced her to do so, and this because she's become obsessed with Natsuo. She tries every excuse to be near him even after discovering he has a relationship with her sister. She never takes her sisters's feelings in account. Then she starts almosts stalking him.
She tries to be in every moment near Natsuo, she makes him expensive and unrequested presents for making him feeling in debt. She does not declare her feelings not because she thinks about her sister, but because she thinks she would be rejected. Practically a terminal case of codependency.
And again, after Natsuo and Rui broke up, she continues with her stalking attitude. She installs herself in his apartment against his will "to protect him". She is jealous about Serizawa to the point she cannot sleep, she is jealous about Rui calling NAtsuo for his birthday, she tries to stay at his side because of HER emotional needs (according to the author herself it's Hina that "cannot live without Natsuo", so her staying near him is only self-serving). She manipulates him in making a promise to tell each other everything, and she breaks the promise in one chapter. After Natsuo chooses Rui, she still forces on him her "help" even if Natsuo tells her it's not needed and he would have felt bad. Calling an abuser. She says she wants nothing in exchange but as soon as she learns about Rui's pregnancy she goes to cry to Marie. Hypocrite. She tries another manipulation by impersonating Tsukiko in a "reharsal" of Natsuo and Rui asking permission to marry. Then, when the reporter menace is there, instead of relying on Marie, she chooses to do everything herself - without telling aanything to Natsuo and Rui. So when the drunk reporter crashs on her, she "saves" Rui but the true question should have been: why Rui and the child were in danger? And again, she does this only to "prove" her "love", which is not love, is only dependence. She rationalizes her choices exactly like Tanabe rationalized him being a psycho. Love is sharing, love is being a couple. Love is NOT throwing yourself under a train to tell someone else "I did it for you". And the ending solves Hina's issues? No. it solves nothing. She is still dependent, without dreams of her own, still unable to be her own persona and not an appendix of Natsuo.

While Rui had her very bad moments, at least she did do self-criticism, she did try to improve and be a better persona. Which she did. Hina never did this.
The author makes excuses in the afterword of last volume but she commits several logic errors, because probably she thinks readers are idiots. First of all, she tells us Hina cannot live without Natsuo (literally) but the says that Rui's love is Koi (love that takes) and Hina's love is Ai (love that gives). The error is that in the case of Hina she is giving for taking, because it's Hina needing Natsuo for her living. That's why she cannot give up on him. If she really loved Natsuo unconditionally, she could have lived without him and let him live his life. Because THIS is true unconditional love. Because Hina needs Natuo, her love is not unconditional, the condition being "staying together with Natsuo because she needs him". On the contrary, Rui grew to a point where she loves Natsuo even if Natsuo is with another person. THIS is unconditional love. So the author does not understand a damn about love, unconditional love, and relationships.
Moreover, the ending is the worst written thing I ever seen, with character acting out of character, improbable reason to change idea, putting all the responsability on Rui when Hina is not held accountant for anythig bad she did (and she did a lot).

In the end, the story is a mess ending in gloryfing ione of the most toxic relationship ever, and THIS is why people criticize the ending, except for braindead fans who only look at boobies and have the relationship experience of a newborn.

I deplore the people who sent death threats to the author, from both girls' fandom. An author ldoes not deserve that.
On the other side, the best thing to do with an author like this is to ignore completely her next works. Because glorifying toxicity is a disservice to true romance and true romance authors.

Domestic na Kanojo review
Honestly.. This manga is one of my most emotional rollercoasters ever. Never have i ever felt so conflicted whether or not a manga, anime or just anything in general was good or BAD. Domestic na Kanojo is one of the toughest mangas ive ever read and since it is still releasing chapters i cant say it is a bad or good manga yet. The ending will for sure change my mind, but when will it fu-excuse my profanity-cking end?! This manga has been going on for so long and could have easily just ended already. I feel like Kei is just keeping this manga going longer than it should. Way longer. Since this review is supposed to be written objectively i will try my best to keep my personal feelings from judging the manga, but make no mistake when i say this.. be prepared to wanna rip your heart out when reading this manga.

So, first off. The story. The plot. What is the plot anyway? A guy is in love with his teacher, Hina Tachibana. Frustrated or just lost in his feelings he seeks a distraction from it all. Thats where we encounter a kawaii little girl named Rui. Rui Tachibana. Does the name ring a bell? Yup, Rui is none other than HINA'S LITTLE SISTER. Since our airhead protagonist Natsuo does not know they're related, he accepts rui's offer to have sex with her. They both lose their virginity to each other. Yes, the story is already a mess, but oh boy. Later we found out that Natsuo's dad is remarrying and guess who's at the doorstep? Yesss.. None other than rui and hin-"WAIT WTF?"
Yup. Hina and rui's mother is marrying Natsuo's dad. And that my fellow weebs, is how the lovely story of domestic na kanojo begins.
The plot was what got me into this anime. I was like "this is so screwed that i wanna read it" i bet you are thinking this too right? Because it is! The plot is interesting, unique and you have never seen incest in an anime or manga bef-
Actually nevermind.. but seriously the plot of domestic na kanojo is good. HOWEVER, the freaking story is ALL OVER THE PLACE after a couple of chapters. 20 chapters or so into the manga and you will find yourself grasping for innocent air. I swear, everything seems to have zero consequenses in this manga! its ridiculous!! I rate the story 8, not because it necessarily teaches you a good life lesson that you can move on to your children or something, but because of the emotions it gave me. As i said, it was a rollercoaster of emotions. I did not expect me to be so touched by the plot twists (even though they were quite obvious). It is not just something to take lighthearted.. believe me you have to prepare yourself for the manga.. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WAIT UNTIL THE MANGA IS COMPLETED OR IT WILL BREAK YOUR HEART!

The art was absolutely ASTONISHING. I was flabbergasted! I love how each character is drawn and the unique details in the characters appearances. I very quickly adapted to the art and felt myself going with it. Fantastic art. 10/10

oh... character... i cant. I just cant. I am going to wrap this up as quickly as i can. Okay here it goes *breathes in* THE CHARACTERS ARE ALL IRRESPONSIBLE YOU WILL POSSIBLY HATE A LOT OF THEM AT ONE POINT OR ANOTHER NO MATTER WHO IT IS. I have some of the characters i like more than others.. but at the end of the day i just cant seem to find at least one i can actually relate or at least feel strongly for..

Enjoyment and overall goes into the same category in my honest opinion.
I enjoyed this manga, i really did, even though its still adding new chapters and is far from done, i think i will take a break from it. I will begin reading whenever its fully completed. I am not going to lie.. this manga is a fucking mess. It may be a beautiful mess at times, but still. A mess no less. I give enjoyment a 7, not because i didnt enjoy it but because sometimes i felt way too pressured. It may not make sense, but the things that happened was not natural. It felt way too forced. I guess im just mad that this manga broke my heart a few times. Sometimes i was excited and happy and others i was furious and irritated, and well then there is the sad part. I truly have never written a review so personal. As soon as i read the last chapter currently out now (which is chapter 220) i just felt the I HAVE TO GET MY FEELINGS OUT. This manga will make you have mixed emotions. Take it from a sensitive guy like me, this manga is amazing. I truly do love it. At the same time though, i also quite hate it. A LOT.
Overall.. 8.

Thanks if you read this far, sorry if the went out of hand. It is my first REAL review ever so i hope it lived up to your expectations. BYEEEE

Domestic na Kanojo review
Now, I went into this manga from the anime. This was one of the first manga I read in its entirety, so as a new manga reader, anything and all things that were bad about this manga went completely over my head.

First things first: the manga is not bad at all. Of course I would have to agree with many people that the story line and character development of this novel just went completely down the s*** hole (It is on the level of Darling in the Franxx bad). The beginning of the story was an interesting take on the taboo that a teacher or step sister gets with MC, exploring how both of the scenarios would play out if they were related in some way. Without any spoilers: After chapters 50ish it goes completely down the drain. The MC is a complete idiot who can't make up his mind, and the parents just sit by and watch as all this goes down. There is just no real story line at all, just arc after arc after arc, and they aren't even that interesting.

It had such potential to be amazing, yet the author had to drag it on for as long as possible. The art in this manga was great however. In the most intense of scenes, you could wholeheartedly feel the emotions of the characters just through the surroundings and faces the illustrator gave them.

Overall I recommend it to any new manga reader or any manga reader in general. It is not the best of reads, but it is not one that should be skipped out. The anime is a complete s*** show and should not have time wasted on it IMO (except the OP, that OP BOPS)

Domestic na Kanojo review
I would have easily rated this higher but I cannot for a few reasons. The characters for the most part were well developed, though Hina would up pretty static. The artwork was consistently solid.

For it being what some might call a "trashy romance," it was written quite well, engaging and even inspiring at times.

But you're only as good as you finish. The last few chapters caused the author to make her characters into caricatures of themselves - because the "plot demanded it."

No matter which girl you wanted to "win" still lost because they either couldn't get past their own inferiority complex or were a consolation prize.

It was possible to get to the same result without trashing the characters, but Sasuga didn't seem to make a well written end a priority of any kind.

This is a series that works only if you get emotionally invested. At the same time, you pretty much have to turn off your brain to be happy with the ending. I can't do that.

Ultimately, I'm rating this overall a 3 because the while the excellent artwork deserves recognition, the story ended with a dud and the characters turned out to be shadows of themselves with the depth and development they had thrown into the garbage bin.

Spoilers ahead....

To elaborate what the Sasuga did to the characters, here is my overall take.

After the long run, I enjoyed the series until this train wreck of an ending. I liked both Rui and Hina, but how we got to the finale was so badly written that it should leave a bad taste in your mouth if you spend enough time thinking about how it all panned out.

So here's my breakdown:

So many problems with how we got to the ending. You have Rui deciding to call off the marriage based on a secondhand conversation around the corner that lacked context - and her reason to act on that makes this all the worse. That 2-3 page conversation with Hina in the final chapter is that she came to the decision because she could never "beat" her sister. She had already been shown to throw off that inferiority complex earlier on in the series. She had been shown to grow and develop into her own woman, with confidence and maturity she didn't have before. But since the "plot demanded it" Sasuga betrays her character by making her a caricature of herself.

It makes Natsuo look bad because it treats him with an insincerity with not only his love for Rui, but towards how he perceived his relationship with Hina. He showed character growth to move forward multiple times throughout the story, including moving on from her when he gave her his ring genuinely recognizing the relationship he did have with her was over. It really did become a familial love on his end - that was written anyway - so he no longer was looking at her like a lover. This even moreso when she was in a coma for several years - so this idea that he would marry her out of love when any emotional connection to her is a shallow one fails to make readers believe that he married HIna because he loved her like a wife. As such, Sasuga fails on the "show, don't tell" by having Natsuo offer up his dialogue that makes it seem like he's talking himself into believing it's love. It's more like because Rui turned him down that Hina became a consolation prize. After all, Hina had already offered up her blessing - and Natsuo and Rui would be married if not for that accident.

As to Hina, she really had no character growth. She was a woman who kept on having bad things happen to her to make the reader feel bad and connected to her - but she herself remained pretty static. She was always looking to the past which was symbolized in her being unable to get rid of the rings. The first time we see her finally start to move forward was in her blessing Rui and Natsuo's marriage and secure that marriage when she decided to stop the tabloid. So Kasuga ultimately betrayed Hina here as well as it made her ability to grow and change meaningless.

All three wind up being caricatures of themselves. The author really treated all three like garbage - so if you really want to be happy with an ending like that, I don't know what to say. I guess you take what you can get if you were TeamHina, but as I saw in a reference elsewhere, it's like seeng a chocolate covered apple, biting into it and instead fiding a rotten onion inside. So I guess enjoy the taste of victory?

There were other ways to end this and still wind up with Hina, so even if you really wanted Hina in the end, you should be dissatisfied.

There is a thread about how you would have changed the ending. Since I really preferred Rui, I decided to play devil's advocate and come up with how HIna would be the one in the end while staying consistent with the depth of writing we did have.

So, starting with the accident - instead of a coma situation, Rui does get injured and loses the baby. She winds up hurt and emotionally distraught over the loss of her child. Because she is unable to cope with everything, she decides to go back to New York, to work and find herself. She tells Natsuo that while she loves him, it's too painful to be with him, so they ultimately break up. She finds a support group in New York with people who deal with grief and winds up connecting with another man there and they slowly develop a relationship.

In the meantime, Hina comforts Natsuo over the loss but never pressures him. Natsuo writes through his grief and Hina supports him throughout while helping him to emotionally heal over the loss of his child. Eventually they kiss and she lets him know that she never stopped loving him.

Then you can "time skip" if you want to show both sisters getting married and happy.

Hina fans get their ship, Rui doesn't wind up rejecting the marriage because of her "inferiority complex" with her sister.

Wrap it up, and viola. A clean end.

If you are a Hina fan, you could have still had your ship while staying true to the characters, but you didn't really get that - and you deserved better than you got.
